LA RETRAITE

On arrival vehicles are parked at Hornton Grounds farm and a ten minute walk brings you to the craftsman built octagonal pod situated by the lake in a secluded valley at the northern tip of the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

La Retraite is an off-grid individual pod set in a private valley where springs rise and flow into the lake and onwards to the river Cherwell and the Thames surrounded by young woodland and farmland both livestock and arable. You may wake up to the baaing of lambs or the lowing of cattle in nearby fields. Deer and badgers inhabit the valley along with numerous birds and rabbits. Pheasants and Partridge from the nearby shoot will wander past too.

La Retraite has solar panels, potable water, a log burner and infrared heating and a shower and compost loo. It sleeps two and can just take a baby in a travel cot. Dogs are welcome but must be kept under control at all times. The pod has a superb sofa bed and you wake up to views across the small lake. On sunny days breakfast on the deck by the lake or BBQ by the picnic logs.

La Retraite is 6 miles from Banbury and 8 miles from Stratford upon Avon. There is a farm shop at Hornton Grounds where stunning pasturefed beef and Lamb and rarebreed pork can be bought. Other supplies will need to be bought before arrival. There is a BBQ and a two ring gas hob to cook on.

Ten minutes walk to the village of Hornton is the Dun Cow pub which offers excellent beer and good food but do check opening times.

On the boundary of the farm is a very popular Indian restaurant, the Indian Queen at Wroxton Heath, some ten minutes walk from the pod.

The outstanding Bell at Shennigton is a forty minute walk away for outstanding lunches and the Rose and Crown at Ratley is a good walk for a lovely meal.

Sensible walking boots or wellies are essential. The countryside is all small valleys and rolling hills. Hornton Grounds is on the D'Arcy Dalton Way, which is a wonderful walking route along with the Macmillan Way. There are delightful Cotswold villages to explore: Ratley, Horley, Balscote and Radway, just over the border in Warwickshire, the site of the infamous Battle of Edgehill.
